About Us
The Department of Emergency Medicine at UMass Medical School in conjunction with UMass Memorial Medical Center, offers a one-year fellowship in Emergency Ultrasound open to board certified/board eligible emergency physicians.

Fellowship training focuses on technical performance and interpretation of ultrasound. While particular attention is paid to the primary six applications of emergency ultrasound as identified by the American College of Emergency Physicians, advanced topics such as procedural, soft tissue, vascular, musculoskeletal, ophthalmic, advanced cardiac and advanced trauma are also covered. The fellow will learn not only from personally performed ultrasound but also participate in weekly video tape review of the nearly six thousand ultrasound examinations performed in our emergency department each year. Implementation of bedside ultrasound into the practice of emergency medicine will be completed through 800 hours of clinical time in the emergency department both in academic and community practice settings.

Emergency Ultrasound faculty at UMass include nationally recognized experts in the field with core teaching provided by three dedicated faculty certified by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers. Instruction is in the form of weekly didactic lectures, hands-on skill sessions, videotape review and targeted teaching by adjunct faculty with special skill sets.

Research is an important component of a career in academic emergency medicine. The ultrasound faculty at UMass are all published in the field and currently involved with multiple projects. During the one year fellowship, the fellow will have an opportunity to be a vital part of many of these projects and develop the skills necessary to design and conduct his/her own studies in the future.

The fellowship year will also include coverage of administrative aspects of emergency ultrasound. This will encompass not only program development, but also training and quality assurance as well as ultrasound coding and billing. The fellow will finish will all the tools necessary for establishing and running a successful ultrasound program.
